  • Furnace: Set the thermostat of your furnace at no higher than 65 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 55 degrees at night.

And if your furnace is more than 20 years old, it could be time to shop for an energy efficient replacement.

  • Windows: Is cold air seeping in? Weather stripping or caulking could keep the winter winds at bay.

In the summer, windows are the number-one source of heat gain. That's why window tinting can screen out heat and block out 99 percent of the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays.

  • Washing Machine: Save your energy. Instead of doing lots of little loads, do a full load and save money on your energy bills and have more time to relax.

And if you're thinking about replacing your washing machine, look for the ENERGY STAR label. ENERGY STAR qualified washers use 35 to 50 percent less water and 50 percent less energy per load. What's more, the design causes less wear and tear and fewer wrinkles on clothes. And better water extraction means less dry time, for further energy savings.

  • Water Heater: Brrrrrr! Keep your water heater toasty warm with an insulating blanket. A blanket can pay for itself in energy savings in one year or less.

And turn the heater down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to save money and energy.

  • Dryer: By selecting the correct drying time, you'll be kind to the environment and your clothes at the same time. Over drying can cause wrinkling and shrinkage.

And be sure to clean the lint filter after each load. A clogged air filter slows drying time and wastes energy.
