Ceiling Fan: Keep those ocean breezes blowing
all summer long. A ceiling fan can improve the comfort of your home and
reduce air conditioning costs.
-
Thermostat: Set the thermostat at 68 degrees
or lower for heating and 78 degrees or higher for cooling. At bedtime, set
the thermostat at 55 degrees.
Ever go to bed with that nagging question: "Did you turn the thermostat
down?" Purchase a programmable or "smart" thermostat and leave the remembering
to the program.
-
Windows: Is cold air seeping in? Weather stripping
or caulking could keep the winter winds at bay.
In the summer, windows are the number-one source of heat gain. That's why
window tinting can screen out heat and block out 99 percent of the sun's
damaging ultraviolet rays.
-
Lights: We've come a long way since Thomas
Edison invented the light bulb. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL's) last up
to ten times longer than traditional bulbs and use about a quarter of the
energy.
Get a bright idea! If you live in the South Bay, visit participating South
Bay city halls. Commit to saving energy and provide your Southern California
Edison account number and you'll be rewarded with a free CFL.

Fireplace: If Santa Claus has already delivered
his packages, be sure to close the damper in your fireplace. If you don't,
your energy savings could be going up in smoke.
